You may remember that a band named **The Antlers** released an album named
_Burst Apart_ in 2011, and that DiS really rather liked it. So much so we
named it our album of the year. You may also be aware that they're headlining
The Shepherd's Bush Empire in London next week (Thurs 26th). We have a spare
pair to give away, so that you and a friend can come see them play. Plus the
band have kindly signed a copy of _Burst Apart_ to throw in for extra measure.

with our editor, and he may try and sneak you into the after-party so you can
get a photo taken with the band to post on your Facebook (no promises -

I'd add cotton sheeting and 4X4 non stick gauze pads. I would also add some rolls of Kling bandage wrap. When you wrap an injury, you need to pad over the gauze dressing with thick cotton sheeting and then wrap over it. If you have to wrap a a joint like the hock, you should never use vet wrap since it isn't flexible enough. Kling is more elastic and breathes. I would also add Vetericyn wound dressing and EMT collagen gel.
Never use hydrogen peroxide on an open wound since it destroys healthy tissue cells and severely impairs healing. it also promotes infection since the dead cells become food for bacteria. You can cleanse intact skin with it, but don't get it near open wounds.
Just flush fresh wounds with saline solution. Saline solution (0.9%) is balanced with body fluids and won't kill healthy cells. The salt in it dehydrates and kills bacteria, and a flush with moderate pressure debrides the wound and also drowns microbes.
The wound dressings recommended today are water based. They don't interfere with the body's ability to heal. Research on wound healing has taught us that less is more, and much of what we used to do actually impaired healing and promoted infections.
Vetericyn is an excellent water based wound dressing that promotes healing. Farnam's Hydrogel is also water based. EMT collagen gel is my personal favorite wound dressing and I also use it on lesions like scratches. It promotes healing, seals out insects, and adheres well. it blocks pain and itch sensation as well, so the horse is not annoyed by the wound.
Avoid all other wound dressings which are are lanolin or oil based, and especially avoid all powders. These all bring about immune rejection responses that impair healing and can promote infections and proud flesh. Powders are the worst since they both dry the wound bed (bad) and elicit the strongest immune rejection.
Any iodine solution over 1% will kill healthy cells needed for healing as well, so saline is preferred to to flush open wounds unless the vet has prescribed otherwise. Keep iodine solution on hand, but only use it when a vet specifically prescribes it.
If a wound may need suturing, just do the saline flush and apply a wet saline gauze against the wound covered by dry gauze (called a wet-dry dressing) and wrap over it. If you can't dress the wound with gauze due to location, keep the wound bed moist and protected with Vetericyn (preferred) while you wait for the vet. Don't use any antibiotic or non-water based wound ointments.
If the wound may require suturing, it is important to flush it well with sterile saline and keep it moist with a water based product like Vetericyn
