But weight-loss researcher Ken Silver discovered that even simple yo-yo weight fluctuations can be catastrophic, and decided to do something about it.
He discovered that most fast-action diet plans will wreck many dieter's good health. These dangerous diets commonly do this by robbing your body of valuable nutrients. Single-food weight loss plans like the soup diet and bread diet not only leave you weak and open to disease, but they can badly affect your blood pressure and heart.
Ken found that the worst diets - like the one that uses mainly lemonade - actually reduce calorie intake so much it causes your body to go into starvation and survival mode.
It's no better with many popular packaged diets, Ken says.
"Packaged food diets can be a disaster waiting to happen," he said. "While they may work initially by reducing calories, they are often filled with nasty preservatives which can weaken and damage the body's immune system."
Like most other diets, the monotony and sameness of a single-food diet becomes too much, and most people go back to normal eating - undoing everything they had gained.
But few people realize the damage they do to their body in this way. Like a runaway train, these diets are a catastrophe waiting to happen.
"Most diets starve you - that's why they are so effective at the beginning," explains Ken. "They reduce calories and fluid levels so low you can't help but lose weight. Sadly it soon becomes impossible to maintain weight loss at the same rate, and your weight bounces back. You may even gain more weight than you had to begin with!"
Many food manufacturers are to blame. Most commercially produced foods and drinks you eat today are designed to make you hungrier.
Buried deep in these products are concealed 'hunger-making' chemicals. Many are not identified by their real name, but often by an obscure chemical one. And the companies search constantly for more of these hidden ingredients, all to make you eat and drink more so they can add to their bulging profits.
Ken has found a way to identify and avoid all these hidden killers in his new plan - and he emphasizes that you can lose a lot of weight while still eating safely.
Be aware, says Ken, any diet program which promises quick weight loss of 10 to 20 pounds a week will damage you. And if the danger that these foods and diets pose is invisible at the start, it soon shows the effect as you get continually more grouchy and irritable.
There's so much conflicting advice about which diet to choose, no wonder people are getting confused, he says.
That's why Ken - a 39-times failed dieter and mildly obese for most of his adult life - decided to do his own research and find out what was making both him and 80% of the Western world's population so fat... even on a diet!
